For All You Brownstoners, An Interesting Article on Sandstone Facades

If you own a brownstone, I think that you will find the article Understanding Sandstone Facades, from the March 2010 issue of the construction specifier, an interesting read.

It explains why the geological characteristics of this sedimentary stone cause it to deteriorate when the orientation of the stone is “face-bedded”.  Essentially, the individual layers which comprise the stone begin to delaminate, erode, and exfoliate with the freeze-thaw cycle.  Due economics factors, many stone slabs of brownstone facades were “face-bedded” during the late 19th century.
